9th Edition Newcrons Explained!

I remember when Necrons only had Warriors... and no fluff. I also remember Chaos Necrons. Such things are weird in modern 40K.

Hello chaps and chapettes, we're back in the classroom to discuss the new 9th Edition models for Necrons (apart from the Skorpehk Destroyer which I talk about here). There has been a glut of new models for the Necrons released, and probably about time too. Let's just do a side by side comparison of the update ones before looking at the new:

And the old ones:

Interesting thing from this is the movement away from the clear plastic tubes that Necrons used to have as an exclusive and faction determining trait.

Why?

Well, customisation of course. The old green plastic pretty much locked you into a particular colour pallette, which meant Your Dudes always had at least one thing in common with Other Players Dudes. Or at least that is the benefit to you. For Games Workshop it means they can retire that plastic tube making machine, and fit everything onto one sprue.

I'm sure this will be a cause of concern for some, but hppily there are may videos and guides ou there showing you how to make plasma/glowing effects using paints. Quite honestly, you don't need to go that far. You could just keep them black or metallic for battle readiness.

The big change in terms or rulings though is the upgraded gun. Necron Warriors have always been mono-weapon units. Now there is a new gun to play around with... which appears to be a straight rip from the Necron Immortals:

More firepower is never a bad thing, and this will certainly make the Warriors a bit more attractive as a Troops choice against the Immortal. Immortals still rock the tesla carbine and generally better stats, so they still have a place in lists, just as the Dire Avengers do compared to Guardians in Eldar lists.

With a little bit of tin foil hat wearing though, we might see a removal of Immortals from the Necron codex. By just changing the stats of Warriors to the Immortals (WS/BS upgrades and armour saves to 3+) you effectively remove the Immortals place as tough Troops choice. I don't know if that's a good thing or not, and I highly doubt it since there's a dual kit for the Immortals and Deathmarks meaning redundancy in a decent selling kit... but we'll see. The only reason I suggest it is because Immortals may not be different enough from Warriors to justify their place in the codex.

Something to look out for though, Start Collecting Necrons is most certainly going to change. Grab them while you can!

Okay, Troops move aside, and let's look at the shinies.

Ooof.

The Skorphek Lord, making all other Overlords and Lords feel inferior... except for maybe the original Destroyer Lords, but I haven't seen them since 3rd Edition in my circles.

Big gun and bigger swords indicate that this is not your simple buffing general. He looks like he's build for bear, so we can expect a very strong melee presence. Whilst probably not at the same level as a Lord Discordant from Chaos Space Marines, we can expect these to be fulfilling a similar role to them and Smash Captains.

Buuuut, they're likely to have a big problem in mobility. Necrons, whilst having some fairly zippy options, tend to the slow and steady side of factions. Although this guy has three legs we can expect to see his movement capping out at the 40K "slightly faster than usual" speed of 8-10 inches. I doubt they'll put him past the target-able character wound limit, but he may just be a fairly blunt charge deterrent in most lists rather than Necron Herohammer.

A lot of the base stats can be found in my article on the new Destoryers here. Just adjust for an unfair amount of wounds, attacks and a command ability/aura.

Looks great though, and I'm sure is drawing a lot of inspiration from the Rock in the Mummy 2.

There's an even bigger slew of reveals in this picture here, but that's going to take a whole blog post in itself. We'll finish up now.

Until next time!
