The Philosophy of the Aeldar

Image
"oh god, delete" - First response to this project. With feedback like that, you'd think I'd stop. I think I can see why though, as the original title of the project was a bunch of weighted labels and didn't really reflect the intent of the project. What I'm aiming to do here is point out the underlying ideas and philosophies of 40K, to create more depth to the (frankly shallow) debate on Feminism and Social Politics of our game. To do so for a table top game about elves with guns sounds like the very definition of time wasting. As my students in the boarding house would say, "Sir, why you dragging it, it's not that deep." But it's a hobby we all spend far too much time thinking and playing in anyway, so why not? It also might seem like a funny spot to start with on a series of Feminisim and diversity in 40K, but I'm going to begin with the Eldar as a race. Most people jump into talking about the Space Marines or the Astra Militaru...

40K 8th Edition Harlequins

One of the weird choices I made was to collect Harlequins before collecting Eldar. My reasons were not based on the models or their stats... I was attracted by their lore. I've always played Bards in Dungeons and Dragons, and the idea of an army of the spoony clowns was just too good an opportunity to miss! My experience with them has been similar to everyone else's: Everything goes well, and then the enemy hits back. The rules for 8th Edition Harlequins have dropped over at Warhammer Community , and since the Grey Knight reveal is taking an age to sift through, we'll start with this. HQ Rampant speculation, but since the Troupe Leader is now missing from the Troupe data sheet, we can quite safely say that Harlies have an HQ. About time really. Troops Are your Troupes. The data sheet below is... well, stunning really. Yes, you read that correctly. Four base attacks. on each Player. Ouch! But the Toughn...

Quick Tip: Stone Weighted Bases

Image
Tired of your Prosecutors and Harlequins falling over? Here's a quick tip. Something that I predict to be a problem for the new flying Inceptors is going to be the top heavy nature of the model. Harlequins and Prosecutors are the same, as they are either flying on a strand of parchment or leaping off of one slender leg. As a consequence, they fall over if someone breathes heavily in their direction. Some people like to glue pennies or other heavy coins under the base. Whilst that's not a bad idea, another way is to glue on some larger, heavier stones when you texture your bases with sand: Harlequins with stone weighted bases Prosecutors with stone weighted bases You don't need that many, depending on what stones you use, and can be cheaper than pennies. All this was in my sack of mixed aggregate for basing anyway, and some of the larger ones I collected on my way into work. The models stay upright, and the extra weight makes them feel a lit...

Warhammer 40K Paint Stripping Guide

Image
I'm getting ready for 8th Edition, and I've booked an appointment with my local games Workshop to go and get my pre-order in for tomorrow (3rd June... get hype!). This is a fantastic opportunity to get some projects going, and I've started off with stripping some of my earlier models. I followed an awful piece of advice and went with a graffiti artists acrylic spray as a primer. Whilst the colour was good, it went on thick and was water repellent. Paint balls up and washes... well just forget about it. The advice after that was to put on another layer of matte varnish... losing more detail. My advice; grab some Dettol. Paint Stripping Equipment Dettol: Original brown liquid, with Chloroxylenol Rubber gloves Well ventilated room Toothbrush Hand soap Access to warm water The Dettol is fairly harmless to humans, and absolutely harmless to plastics. Make sure you get the brown liquid one, as Dettol have started making a lavender one without that Chloroxyl...
