Shattered Spear, An Aeldari/Grey Knights Battle Report

Image
Well... that didn't go according to plan. An exercise in not being too over confident in your own abilities, but at the same time a moment of pride as a student finally learns his army. This was a battle I had with a student in the club, and I'm really pleased with the result in a number of ways! However, I'm also now acutely aware of problems in my army list building. The Aeldar Craftworld Wild Riders of the Bright Spear flotilla faced against a small force of the Emperor's Hammer, the Grey Knights of Titan. Here are the forces: The Bright Spear Wild Riders Outrider Detachment (Aeldar Craftworld) Craftworld Attribute: Saim-Hann Wild Host (Re-roll Charges, Bikers can move and shoot Heavy Weapons without penalty) HQ Autarch Skyrunner: Laser Lance (Nova Lance), Twin-linked Shuriken Catapult [108 pts] Farseer Skyrunner: Singing Spear, Twin-linked Shuriken Catapult Psyker: Doom, Fortune, Smite [140 pts] Troops Ranger Squad: 5 Rangers with Long...

Beginner Grey Knight 500 point Army List: The Lightning Hammer

Image
Ironically does not use hammers. We had our first session for the Warhammer club at school two days ago, and preparations have begun in earnest for the School League tournament. I have some Student Initiates now, older players from last academic year who have significantly upped their game and model count. They've even painted them! I've been feverishly build crafting for them, trying to sort out some outrageously cheesy lists to fit inside a 650 point School League limit, and I'm getting quite a bit of success. They often turn into one trick ponies, but the one trick usually has flexible enough application so they don't meet a hard counter. One of our newest neophytes is getting into the hobby for the first time, and has chosen to go with Grey Knights. He really likes the idea of paladins in space, but what really caught his eye was this: Image taken from the Games Workshop webstore It's not hard to see why... despite the flak it gets for l...

New Grey Knights Reveal Explained!

Image
I've been burned before trying to pint out some of the negatives with New Games Workshop, but I think the latest Grey Knights Codex reveal has a few question marks surrounding it. I was flicking through my Codex Space Marines today, trying to justify my Space Marine Field Police using the White Scars chapter tactic, when the similarities between the latest Codex Chaos Space Marines stratagem reveals and the Space Marine ones became clear to the point of absurd. An hour later I saw Warhammer Community had uploaded the Grey Knights staff, and it felt like deja vu... and it suddenly clicked as to why the Grey knights got their codex in the first batch. I also think a lot of what I said on my full break down of their leak will still be true. Have a look if you want a full context of where all this is coming from. Space Wolves had True Grit once for holding a bolter one handed... Grand Master Nemesis Dreadknight So the Grand Master of your Grey Knights can now ride a N...

BREAKING NEWS: New Codex Reveals!!

Image
To no ones surprise, Codex Space Marines will be hitting shelves in late July ! Codex Adeptus Astartes! At a glance, it looks like we're sticking with the hardback, no really embarrassing to have on a bookshelf look we were introducd to with the last edition of codexes. These are books for collectors, as opposed to the (far cheaper!) magazine style codexes we have when I first started. In each codex we'll have what we've come to expect: Warlord traits Relics (read special items) Psychic powers Objectives But the newcomer to 8th Edition is the unique Stragems for each army. What this effectively means is that all armies will have another layer of complexity on top of 7th. Which is really an excellent thing. The core game play has been streamlined, leading to some more interesting things we can do with layered rules on top. It becomes far easier to teach, as you can simply start with core rules, and then start adding on these layers as play...

40K 8th Edition Grey Knights (Huge Reveal!)

Image
Have to admit, I stopped collecting Grey Knights a good long time ago. And by that I mean second edition. But I've always kept tabs on these Shiny Super Space Marines, mostly because I never grew out of my teenage Paladin Phase. Paragon until the day I die. But let's find out what they will be like in 8th Edition! Grab yourself a cup of tea first, this could take a while... HQ Kalador Draigo We might as well start with the biggest ball of cheese. The weirdly referentially named Draigo was the most polarising character ever created in the Wardian era of Mary Sue development. Known for stabbing demon Primarchs in the heart, and possibly undergoing a Quantumn Leap style quest through the warp, his table top presence was no less feared. He's been downgraded to merely really good in this edition. Huzzah! His best two features are his re-rolled failed to hit buffs and his really good sword. The Titan sword allows him to hit at Str 8, and with a -4 ...
