Painting Guide: Blood Angels, perfecting the colour scheme

Image
Looking for some tips on getting the best out of your Sons of Sanguinius? Want some simple ways of making your Blood Angels look good without having to get an art diploma first? Well let's get started then, and show you how to paint this Blood Angels Intercessor Space Marine. Blood Angels were one of my first armies in 40K, and a favourite of many a neophyte and veteran alike. Their red colour scheme, along with Dark Angels Green and Ultramarines Blue, is one of the standard newbie palettes that can look good with only a little bit of skill. Like the others in that little triumvirate, it still has ways you can tweak it to be really great looking on table top. What I've done here is nothing more than the standard Games Workshop recommended paint scheme, with some tweaks and tips to get to that 'eavy metal stage. I often see people copying what comes out of the Citadel Paint App or Duncan's videos, and never quite getting these results (usually darker withou...

GW Christmas Exclusives 2016

Image
Boxing day sales are a grand tradition in the UK, but it looks as though the miniature companies have put all their effort into the pre-Christmas run up this year.  Basically nothing to report, and if you're looking for some good deals on minis today, I'd head to your local hobby shop to check out what's there. It's a bank holiday, and it looks as though my local Games Workshop is still open (albeit shortened hours). But GW has done some special offers  on their Web store for some classic minis. Some are truly ancient artifacts from the before times when things were different, but a few of them wouldn't look out of place in a modern army. Before any one gets excited, they're all Imperials. No Christmas cheer for you Xeno scum! Just want to make special note of the chaplain: Now this wasn't my first HQ model, but it was my favourite.  He led my Ravenwing Dark Angels for a long time before getting a spotty white pauldron and hea...

Are Rubric Marines Overcosted?: Psychic Potential

Image
So after looking at the assault values, the only thing I can really say about making the Rubrics more defensively capable is to remove the Slow and Purposeful. If you wanted to maintain the fluff, then have the unit be Relentless unless in the presence of their Sorcerer, in which case they become SaP. Anyone else think that acronym was done on purpose by the designers? Anyway, the Relentless rule is going to allow them to fire in overwatch, actually making them a shooting unit. You can't be considered a shooting unit if your firepower is roughly equivalent to a standard jack-of-all trades tactical squad, especially when they can shoot in more situations than you can. But let's look at the real selling point of the Rubric Marines; the Sorcerer surrounded by meat shields. I mean dust shields. And at this point, hard statistics fail us. Psychic powers are very much what are called incalculables. Incalculables are game mechanics which don't have an easy to quantify p...

Sons of Horus Successors

Image
Ever since the Blood Ravens popped up as potential loyalist successors to the Thousand Sons (and there is a fair bit of evidence to support this), other traitor legion Space Marine chapters have been postulated and speculated over. Mostly this is due to the lore having a severe credibility problem in 40K. It's intentionally kept loose and flexible, to allow for new twists and the all important concept of Your Dudes. In Warhammer, the word fluff is really apt, as nothing is certain or a hard truth. Since I haven't been able to get to my work laptop today, and thus can't get to my lovely spread sheets on the Rubric Marines, I'm going to float this as an option for the Lunar Wolves loyalist successor. First, what do we know of the Lunar Wolves/Sons of Horus/Black Legion. They have a thing for sudden, overwhelming assaults They prefer brutal close combat They are not frothing beserkers, but simply ferocious fighters They have a gang culture, with gang marki...

Are Rubric Marines over-costed?

Image
Image from Black Library We can get carried away with new model hype sometimes. As Wrath of Magnus hits the shelves, people everywhere are claiming the great Psychic potential of the army, and the revolutionary new paradigm for Chaos Space Marine players. People claiming the Thousand Sons are going to be a very powerful army are everywhere, and part of me wants to simply agree to that and ride the hype train. Then some prick writes an article to ruin everyone's fun. My fanboy reaction urged me to counter-attack the disappointment, and my sceptical analysis tools jumped into the fray to prove the writer wrong. Rather than looking at the unit as a normal Troop choice, I instead look at it as an Objective Secure Psyker with 4 ablative wounds that have invulnerable saves and really good guns. But then if I do that, I do need to prove that it is decent in that role. And unfortunately, there are a number of units that can do similar things, if not quie so neatly fitti...

Warhammer 40K 8th Edition: Corax returns

Image
This article over at Bell of Lost Souls got me to thinking. It's a good piece talking about the likelihood of certain primarchs coming back. As much as I'd love to see the Great Khan riding back on a Dark Eldar reaver jetbike, screaming out on a bolt of lightning from the web way, I don't think it's likely. We could engage in speculation all day about any primarch coming back and the reasons for it, but something else in the rumour mill caught my eye: -8th Edition starter is Astartes vs Chaos Marines. -Rulebook will be similar to Age of Sigmar’s General’s Handbook. -Look for Campaign Books similar to the Realmgate Wars series. -Point costs and rules for Army construction will be in the “General’s Handbook” and future codex-like Books -Release date for 8th Edition is June -The new Edition will be set after Abaddons’s 13th Black Crusade -Initial focus on factions will be on Imperium vs. Chaos -There are brewing disagreement between the re...

Mathhammer: White Scar Bikes vs. Ravenguard Assault Marines

Image
After number crunching through the best assault troopers of the Adeptus Astartes, I briefly wondered about the other Fast Attack option of the Demi-Company; the biker squad. Right now they are quite rightly used as a double special weapon platform (usually grav-guns), and the best Chapter without question for them is the White Scars. You could argue Iron Hands makes them a much better defensive unit, but ignoring difficult terrain and a 3+ jink save is hard to beat. By the way, strongly consider biker Black Templars. Bike squads tend to be tough enough to only lose one biker in a round of over watch, and raging Templars can lay a considerable smack down on the charge. Also: power armoured Teutonic knights! The traditional wisdom is that bikes are for shooting, and Assault troops for assault (hence the name). But White Scars have a bonus to Hammer of Wrath attacks, indicating that maybe they should be getting into assaults too. A biker unit is able to double t...

Warhammer 40K, Mathhammer: Who're the best Assault Marines?

Image
Blood Angels. Next question. Ha, no. In fact Blood Angels are not the great assault army they're fluffed out to be. They're certainly a little more assault than most, and the Death Company leave a mark wherever they go. However, with the removal of Assault Marines as troops, the majority of the army is red coloured Space Marine. But don't take my word for it. let's do some maths to find out who the best Assault Marines are! The Experiment We need to clarify what is actually meant by 'the best Assault Marines'. For the purpose of this little study, we're going to take Assault Marine as meaning jump pack equipped Marine with 2 close combat weapons. We're going to exclude the special units out there, such as Vanguard Vets and Death Company, as we're only going to be looking at the actual Assault Squad, as laid down by the Codex Astartes and adjusted on a chapter to chapter basis. We're also going to have to set some conditions in ...
