Remembrance Day 2017
Please spare a moment of your time to think about the soldiers who aren't made of plastic, and for whom a failed save roll is much more bitter.
Remembrance Day is a UK event where we remember fallen and still active soldiers who have gone out to fight in our place. It's important for us as war gamers to not forget the reality of combat, so that we never bury the seriousness of a squaddie's sacrifice under abstract dice rolls and clinical ruling.
This is especially true if you work with kids, like I do. We run the risk of glamorising war with each flick of the paint brush, and often go out of our way to make killing tools look good. That's not to say we shouldn't enjoy our hobby, that would be daft. We just need to occasionally remind ourselves, and the young people we engage with, that we only play a game.
With that said, I'm not going to leave this post as a sermonising lecture, and instead give you a quick painting tutorial. If you like it, please go drop a few pennies in your local veterans or Poppy box.
It would also be a nice show of appreciation to paint up some Poppy holders like mine, and post a few pics on your favourite social media outlet. There's still some time before Remembrance Sunday, and it only takes about an hour at the most.
Step 1
The first step is to clip off any of the weapons on your mini. I don't think I need to explain why. I messed up with my Liberator, and left the sword in the scabbard.
Step 2
After the undercoat of your choice, Base coat the model in Mephiston red.
Step 3
Apply an all over wash of Carrabourg Crimson.
Step 4
Dry brush with Evil Sunz Scarlet.
(Optional Step 4.5)
Layer highlight with Evil Sunz Scarlet and Troll Slayer Orange.
Step 5
Base Coat in Abaddon Black and Incubi Darkness
Step 6
Highlight the black with Dark Reaper and Fenrisian Grey. Highlight the Incubi Darkness with Kabalite Green and Hellion Green.
Step 7
Cover the base in static grass. Keep it nice and bright... no more foot slogging through mud for these soldiers.
Normal service resumes Monday next week.
Until next time!
