Space Wolf Chapter Tactic revealed, and my prediction confirmed!

The Space Wolf “chapter tactic” has been revealed over at Warhammer Community, and it looks like I was right in my prediction!

Well, sort of.

Back in March I predicted the Space Wolf trait to be the same as the recently revealed Necron one for the Novokh dynasty.

Everything I say there about how why this would be good for the Space Wolves is still true, so if you want to read a discussion about how this would work with the Vylka Frenryka have a quick look there first.

Games Workshop were a little more careful with their buff on the Space Wolves in comparison to the Necrons, perhaps because of the Sons of Russ are more universally close combat themed. Whereas a Necron Warrior or Immortal is defensive and ranged first, an average Grey Hunter is likely to have two attacks thanks to the chainsword with some power weapons thrown into the squad.

As such, adding 1 to Hit rolls makes them a lot better than base on the charge or receiving one, without making them too strong.

Here’s a quick table to show you the average Intercessor’s hits in combat in the first round.

You can see the comparative buffs easily, and you can see another reason why adding 1 to Hits is much more Wolfy.

If you take a Wolf Lord near your combat units, then you will be hitting your target nearly all the time. Remember that a natural 1 is always a failed attack. Wolf Lords typically allow you to re-roll to Hits of 1. Since the average wolf will be now striking on a 2+ on the charge, this means you have to work really hard to miss!

Put bluntly, your Lords fighting in the thick of the melee surrounded and inspiring their Troops means very few attacks are going to miss. Just as your want from a Space Wolf army!

The second part of the trait is interesting. 6-inch Heroic intervention is always good for your melee beat sticks, but this trait means they can complete a heroic intervention regardless of if the enemy charged or not. With this, you can create some 6-inch radius bubbles the enemy will continuously move away from, lest they be charged by an angry Wolf Guard Battle Leader in their own turn!

So, all good stuff really. I’m desperate to start a Space Wolf army at this point, but really can’t afford either time or money to do all the projects I want to complete! I might simply scale down my Death Watch Army to a small patrol at this point.

Ah well… good problems to have.

Until next time!
